Pop-up Memories!
FREE giveaway, remembering
Menia’s, Mull’s, and Stop-a-Lott!
612 Pennsylvania Ave.
California, PA 15419
Sunday, June 30
2-2:30PM
Older residents will fondly recall Menia’s store, located on Pennsylvania Avenue. Reshar and Irene Menia’s penny candy case enthralled children of all ages. Many remember the flying saucers, jaw breakers, Swedish fish, and bottles of pop–return the empty bottle (or scour the neighborhood for discarded ones to return) for the nickel deposit so you could buy more candy!
Neighborhood stores throughout the community thrived, incluing Zahand’s, Glott’s, Tarr’s, Winfield’s, Cantinetti’s, Weimer’s, Sack’s, Capanna’s Dairy Bar, and Cappalonga’s…forgive us if we missed mentioning your favorite!
Menia’s was eventually sold to the Mull family and became Mull’s. In the ’80s, it became Stop-a-Lott, with Harold Krahmer and Dee Krahmer Powell as its final proprietors. The store is now a private residence, which is the property of the Krahmer family–Harold’s daughter, Ashley, owns the building and his daughter, Kelly, lives there! They have graciously permitted us to host a pop-up here. Thank you!
Watch for Pop-up Memories announcements on our website and on Facebook. We’ll give you a couple of day’s notice. Quantities are limited, so it’s first come, first served! One giveaway per person per event, please. All ages welcome! In the fun spirit of pop-ups, we expect to be at each location for only 15-30 minutes. Look for our Pop-up Memories banner. If you don’t see it, you missed it!
